We have thought about getting a cat for a long while, but Hubster was adamant it had to be a white female cat, which did rather limit the possibilities in our locality, but he has patiently been looking at the local cat shelter site and a few weeks ago, he said to me: "I've found our cat!"
Imagine my surprise when he showed me a bedraggled, woe-begone, shorn cream Persian cat who was about five years old.....but after seeing her little face, I agreed that this was indeed our cat and hauled the two teenagers out of bed with instructions to be ready in to leave in five minutes.
When the staff took us to meet her, she was cowering in the back of her pen, hidden in her little cat den, and it took a great deal of coaxing and persuasion to get her to even lift up her head and look at us, but eventually she did let us stroke her, then slowly emerged to let us see her. What a poor little girl she was - emaciated from her time as a stray, her fur shorn short because of all the mats and tangles and a bald patch where she had been neutered, and with weeping eyes due partly to an eye infection and partly due to the tear duct problems which so often plague the pure Persian breed cats.
The staff said she was very, very timid and it would take months for her to become fully happy and confident, but that she was desperate for love, and that was very obvious to us. We agreed she needed to come home with us, and the requisite 24 hour cooling -off period was lengthened by a week as the vets there wanted to make sure she was truly well enough to be released, but on 13th May, we brought our little Bramble home.....
Look how bald she is in places!
She quickly found a little hiding place in the room dedicated
to her use till she felt brave enough to start exploring.
A few days later, she is braver :
Feeling confident enough to eat and allow Mum to take photos:
Yes, she has lots of toys....
After a week of twice daily eyedrops (boy, that was fun!), she had to return to the shelter
for their vet to check her eyes, and was pronounced infection-free!
She likes to bask in the sun.
And stake her claim to Mum's pillow....
As well as just generally be adorable!
